August 28, 2006 - Charges were filed today against a former Monroe County Sheriff's Deputy. The State Attorney General's Office filed two felony charges of misconduct by an officer and two misdemeanor theft charges against Richard Swenson. The investigation began about nine months ago when Monroe County Sheriff Pete Quirin says the department started to receive complaints from people that Swenson took money from them during his official contacts with them. Quirin says the department did their own internal investigation, but could not find any evidence and about a month ago asked for help from the Attorney General's Office. Swenson was arrested on August 18th after allegedly taking money from an undercover D.C.I. Special Agent's wallet during a traffic stop. Quirin says the department is glad the investigation is over and his officers hope to restore the public's faith in them. Quirin stated "they still sometimes get questions about it and sometimes they will get snide remarks from people saying they better protect their wallets. We don't like it, but it's something we're going to have to live with." Quirin emphasizes that this was the lack of integrity by one of his deputies and does not reflect the office as a whole. www.weau.com/news/headlines/3753182.html
