August 27, 2006 - VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - A veteran Virginia Beach police officer is charged with extortion. Virginia State Police say 51-year-old Sergeant Jesse Spry the Third -- a sergeant with 28 years on the Virginia Beach police force -- was arrested Friday and released on bail after being charged with extortion. The indictment was sealed until yesterday. State police say in a news release that their investigation began in June after Virginia Beach police got a complaint about extortion involving the purchase of a vehicle that Spry owned. Police and prosecutors would not release further details. Virginia Beach Commonwealth's Attorney Harvey Bryant said yesterday that no one in his office took any pleasure from Spry's arrest. Bryant cited Spry's many years of service to the community. A trial date has not been set. www.wavy.com/Global/story.asp?S=5309941&nav=23ii
