07.12.2006 - A former Coryell County deputy who allegedly stole about $5,000 of department money likely will face a grand jury this month, the county sheriff said. The narcotics investigator and 22-year veteran at the sheriff’s department was fired June 16 for violation of department policy, County Sheriff Johnny Burks said. The former deputy, who has not been arrested, was expected to face a grand jury last month, but his case was delayed. Burks said he believes the case will be heard at the July 20 grand jury session. The case is being handled by Assistant Attorney General David Glickler, who has refused to comment. Texas Attorney General’s Office spokesman Jerry Strickland said he could not comment on the case because the investigation was ongoing. He would not confirm that the former deputy will face a grand jury this month. Burks asked the Texas Rangers to investigate in February after money discrepancies aroused suspicion six months earlier, Burks said. The deputy was placed on paid administrative leave later in February, Burks said. Texas Rangers Sgt. Matt Brady, who led the investigation, said the missing money amounted to about $5,000. The funds were “buy money” intended to pay undercover informants for information, Burks said. www.wacotrib.com/news/content/news/stories/2006/07/08/07082006wacdeputyintrouble.html
