LAKELAND -- Angilo Freeland, the man who shot and killed Polk County Deputy Sheriff Matt Williams on Thursday, was shot 68 times by SWAT team members, according to an autopsy conducted Friday night.
Autopsy results, released Saturday, show Freeland died of multiple gunshot wounds, according to Polk County Sheriff's spokeswoman Carrie Rodgers.
Freeland was shot and killed by nine SWAT team members Friday at 9:35 a.m. in a heavily wooded area near where he shot and killed Williams and his K-9 partner, Diogi, and shot and wounded Deputy Doug Speirs. The deputies and the dog had pursued Freeland when he ran into the woods after being stopped for speeding.
SWAT team members pushing their way through the woods off 10th Street and Wabash Avenue on Friday morning stumbled upon Freeland, who was hiding under a fallen oak tree. When they shouted at him to put up his hands, he showed only one hand. In the other hand they saw a gun, which turned out to be a gun he had taken from Williams after he killed him, Sheriff Grady Judd has said.
The SWAT team members opened fire, killing Freeland instantly. Of the 110 rounds fired at Freeland, 68 hit him.
The largest manhunt in Polk County history ended 21 hours after Freeland shot and killed Williams.
According to the Polk County Sheriff's Office, Williams was cut down by eight gunshots, one of which was a contact wound, where the muzzle was touching his right temple.
