05.27.2006 - Dane County Sheriff's Deputy Mark Rasmussen was arrested Friday on a tentative charge of possession of child pornography.
Rasmussen, 37, a member of the Sheriff's Office for seven years, was the subject of a brief late afternoon bail hearing in which Dane County District Attorney Brian Blanchard and defense attorney Lester Pines appeared and agreed that Rasmussen would be released on a signature bond pending an initial appearance in the case.
The Sheriff's Office confirmed the arrest but did not say what the charge was.
Blanchard said the department had referred a possession of child pornography to his office, which will make the final charging decision.
The investigation leading to the arrest was conducted by the state Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation, which has been conducting numerous investigations throughout the state on child pornography.
At the bail hearing, Dane County Circuit Judge James Martin approved the request for a signature bond. He set conditions of that bond that Rasmussen could not use a computer while the case against him is pending except as it pertained to work, cannot have contact with anyone under the age of 19 without supervision and cannot leave the state of Wisconsin.
Rasmussen will be put on administrative leave while the case against him is pending, Sheriff's Sgt. Dennis Sieren said Friday.
