11.10.2006 - A veteran Madison police officer proved to a court his domestic violence charges should be dismissed. But Officer Russell Henderson has still been fired, more than two years after being placed on paid leave. Madison Police and Fire commissioners fired Henderson after meeting 28 times to consider his future. Henderson was arrested in September 2004 for domestic violence against his son, an elementary school student. In 2005, a court found Henderson responsible for the violence, and placed him in a first offender's program. Henderson completed the program, and the criminal case against him was dismissed. But the former Madison Memorial High School resource officer and 20-year police veteran was fired by the PFC at the request of Chief Noble Wray. PFC members pointed to henderson's violence and untruthfulness. One member argued, henderson deserved only an unpaid suspension. During Henderson's paid suspension, he received at least $123,000. Another Madison police officer, detective Michael Grogan, has been on paid suspension since 2004 and was convicted this year of a misdemeanor crime. As the Police and Fire Commission considers Grogan's future, he's collected at least $98,000. State law requires paid leave for police officers and firefighters who are under disciplinary investigation. Russell Henderson's attorney, Gordon McQuillen told 27 news, he's disappointed Henderson did not get the chance to keep his job. www.wkowtv.com/index.php/news/story/p/pkid/25275
