09.18.2006 - A Helen police officer has been placed on administrative leave with pay after being charged with simple battery in a fight with his wife. Officer Roy Edward Smith, 34, was taken to the White County Jail by Cleveland police officers Sept. 8 after his wife, Ana Marisa Smith, called 911 at their Mountain Overlook Drive home. According to a police report, Ana Smith said she and her husband had been arguing and she had tried to leave. She said Roy Smith had taken her keys and she tried to call 911 when he attempted to take away her cell phone. Ana Smith said she turned away and her husband tried to hold her and take the phone. She then said she bit Roy Smith on the arm and he let her go, according to the police report. Helen Police Chief Ted Ray said the incident is under investigation and couldn't say whether Roy Smith will face any disciplinary actions. Smith was formerly with the Cleveland Police Department before joining the Helen Police Department. www.whitecountynewstelegraph.com/articles/2006/09/14/news/news04.txt
