A Milwaukee police officer stands accused of assaulting his girlfriend while wearing his uniform last week - the latest in a string of Milwaukee officers charged with crimes in recent months.
Lenard Simpson, 35, is charged with criminal damage to property, disorderly conduct and battery - all misdemeanors. If convicted, he would face up to 21 months in jail and a $21,000 fine.
Simpson, a four-year veteran who works the late shift in police District 7, was suspended following his arrest, said Anne E. Schwartz, department spokeswoman. He will continue to draw pay, according to state law.
Since February, at least four officers have been charged with crimes and a fifth was arrested for drunken driving.
According to a criminal complaint in the Simpson case, Simpson confronted a woman he had been dating for a year about his suspicions that she was dating someone else as well. At 6 a.m. Wednesday, Simpson called the woman in a home in the 2500 block of N. 54th St., and demanded that she call the "other man" and break off their relationship, the complaint says. She denied having a relationship, according to the complaint.
An hour later, Simpson, wearing his uniform, broke a window in her door, entered, punched the woman in the chest and arm, and kicked her in the buttocks, the complaint says.
