CAPE CORAL, Fla. - The man who shot his estranged wife's aunt and father before apparently killing himself quit his job as a Collier County sheriff's deputy three days before the shootings, authorities said.
Thomas Ciesla, 28, had worked as a corrections officer at the Collier County jail until he resigned on Tuesday, said Brigid O'Malley, spokeswoman for the sheriff's office. Details of his resignation were unavailable Sunday.
Police said Ciesla killed Carol Lindner, his wife's 63-year-old aunt and Thomas Podejko, his wife's father, on Friday. He also shot Thomas Lindner, his wife's uncle, in the hand. The injury was not considered life threatening.
Ciesla did not shoot his wife, Amy Ciesla, who had gone to live with her father, police said. Authorities were still trying to determine what triggered the shootings.
An officer responding to the domestic disturbance at 9:15 p.m. Friday fired a shot, but police said he did not hit anyone. Authorities believe Ciesla shot himself, but are waiting to for autopsy results to confirm the suspected suicide.
Ciesla started work at the Collier County jail on Feb. 17, 2004, O'Malley said. He was given an honorable discharge from the U.S. Army after serving from 1996 to 2000.
He graduated from Manville High School in Manville, N.J., and worked at a cable company before joining the sheriff's office, O'Malley said.
