07.01.2006 - A Port Arthur police officer has been arrested by the Orange County Sheriff’s office and charged with the assault of his wife. The officer, James Mouton, 31, has been placed on administrative leave pending results of an investigation.
Mouton was arrested by the Orange County Sheriff’s office for Class A Family Violence and Class A Interference with an Emergency Telephone Call. Both are misdemeanor charges.
According to Orange County Sheriff’s Lt. Mike Marion, the PAPD officer was arrested at his home in the 3000 block of Dearing in Bridge City after officers were called around 5 a.m. Thursday to investigate a domestic violence disturbance.
Mouton’s wife declined to press charges, but pending the results of the investigation, the Orange County District Attorney’s office could elect to file charges on behalf of the state.
The victim was transported by ambulance to Memorial Hermann Baptist Hospital-Orange where she was treated and released for what appeared to be minor injuries.
Marion said the charges could be elevated to a felony depending on the severity of the injuries. The department is awaiting hospital medical reports before proceeding.
According to John Owens, PAPD deputy chief of administration, Mouton has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation by the Orange County District Attorney’s Office and the Internal Affairs Office of the Port Arthur Division.
“The case is still under investigation,” Marion said.
If convicted of the misdemeanor charges Mouton faces up to one year in jail and up to a $4,000 fine. In addition, according to the federal statute any person convicted of domestic violence cannot posses a firearm.
