06.28.2006 - A local police officer gets to keep his job, but his role on the force is still up in the air.
The Clinton Police Merit Board voted that officer Todd Goldner cannot be terminated or disciplined.
But Vermillion County Prosector Nina Alexander wrote back in April that Goldner should be let go from the force.
Last month, Alexander spoke before the Merit Board saying she would not prosecute any arrests Goldner makes because he is not a credible witness.
Officer Goldner was charged with domestic battery last fall, those charges were deferred and would be dropped if he complied with a plea agreement.
Tuesday night, the board recommended the police department conduct an investigation as to the underlying reasons for the Prosecutor`s discontent with Goldner.
We spoke to a colleague of Officer Goldner after the announcement was made:
"I think the merit board did its job. They took the facts that they had brought before them and they took the law combined with the moderator-attorney being their legal side, and they put it all together and came to a conclusion. They stated that there has to be another investigation done, when they do their investigation and go back before the Merit Board or whoever, you know, it`s just gonna start over again, it`s like a never ending process," said Clinton Police Officer Curtis Stoffel.
Now it`s up to the Police Chief to decide whether to do an investigation.
