06.22.2006 - CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - A police officer was accused of assaulting his wife during an argument late Tuesday night. Officer Kelly Hewett, 36, was arrested and charged with aggravated domestic assault and was released Wednesday on $5,000 bond. Hewett's 30-year-old wife, Angela, told police she was in argument with her husband earlier in the night and took a pistol with her for protection when she went to sleep in the car. According to a police report, the husband went to the car, grabbed the gun from her hand and struck her in the head with it. When she yelled for help, he then grabbed her by the hair, put her in a chokehold and threw her onto a stairway, police said. The wife was treated for injuries at Gateway Medical Center. Hewett has been an officer in Clarksville since 1998 and he and his wife had only been married for three months, according to public records. He was placed on administrative leave Wednesday, pending a criminal investigation and an internal investigation by the department's Professional Integrity Unit. www.knoxnews.com/kns/state/article/0,1406,KNS_348_4793637,00.html
