06.16.2006 - LOWELL -- A Lowell police officer has been placed on paid administrative leave pending an investigation into allegations he assaulted his mother.
Charles Sadlier, a 28-year veteran of the force, was arrested Tuesday night and charged with domestic assault and battery. He was arraigned in Lowell District Court on Wednesday and is scheduled for a pre-trial hearing on Aug. 8.
Sadlier was held overnight on Tuesday, following his arrest and was released on his own recognizance. Police responded to the Lowell resident's 54 Marlborough St. home after receiving three 911 phone calls from his brother's home next door, reporting a domestic confrontation.
When police arrived they found Sadlier's 75-year-old mother, Bessie, on the steps, saying that her son had just pushed and shoved her, knocking her to the ground. Court reports indicate that Sadlier and his mother live in the same building. He was ordered to have no contact with her.
The report also states that the confrontation involved family property. Sadlier was arrested without incident and was forced to surrender his weapons.
Police Superintendent Edward Davis said that an Internal Affairs investigation is being conducted. Information in the case is being turned over to City Solicitor Christine O'Connor.
"We can expect some disciplinary action to be handed down soon, based on the current circumstances as well as several past infractions," Davis said.
