03/17/2006 - Decatur Police Officer Gregory Seffernick has been placed on administrative leave with pay for an indefinite period after he was arrested, accused of battering his 14-year-old stepdaughter in the front-yard of his home.
According to Decatur Police Chief Ken Ketzler, police received a call from a Decatur resident, reporting a disturbance at Seffernick’s home about 4:30 p.m. Monday.
Seffernick, 35, had reportedly been pushing and shoving the girl and then struck her in the face. She kicked at him, and he struck her again in the face, leaving a visible mark, Ketzler said.
He was arrested on a Class A misdemeanor charge of battery and booked into the Adams County Jail. He later was released on $5,000 bond, Ketzler said.
“We have to treat him the same,” he said.
Although Seffernick has been suspended indefinitely with pay, city officials will wait to make a decision on his position with the department until the battery case is resolved, Ketzler said.
His next hearing date is scheduled for May 10. Seffernick, a former Allen County Jail officer, has been previously disciplined by the Decatur Police Department for other issues. He has been with the department for six years, Ketzler said.
