01.21.2007 - WARSAW – A Kosciusko County sheriff’s deputy arrested on his second drunken-driving charge resigned Tuesday, Sheriff William “Rocky” Goshert said. The resignation of Cpl. Douglas K. Brumfield, 35, of Warsaw, will be effective as soon as he uses all the vacation and compensation time he accrued, Goshert said. Goshert estimates that Brumfield has about a month’s worth of vacation and compensation time. After Brumfield’s resignation is effective, Goshert said he will begin taking applications to fill the vacancy. Brumfield was arrested by Warsaw police about 2 a.m. Jan. 7 and booked into the Kosciusko County Jail on a charge of operating while intoxicated, according to police records. He was off duty at the time. After his arrest, Brumfield was placed on paid leave, Goshert said. By resigning, Brumfield avoided going before a merit board where he may have been fired, Goshert said. In March 2003, Brumfield pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, court records show. In addition to being fined and having his driver’s license restricted for 180 days, Brumfield was sentenced to 60 days in jail with 54 days suspended. Brumfield is the second Kosciusko County employee to be involved in alcohol-related cases recently. Matthew T. Shively, 25, a part-time Kosciusko County assistant prosecutor, was involved in a criminal recklessness complaint at Mad Anthony Brewing Co., 113 E. Center St., Warsaw, on Dec. 14, according to police records. Wabash County Prosecutor William C. Hartley Jr. is serving as special prosecutor in the Shively case. On Thursday, Hartley said he needs more information from police before he decides whether to file formal charges against Shively. He expects to make a decision by early next week. Shively has worked for the prosecutor’s office for about three years. www.fortwayne.com/mld/journalgazette/16497829.htm
