07.21.2006 - A Bernalillo County deputy fired this week after being arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated has been formally charged with DWI. Officer Aaron Hagel was driving his marked squad car on Interstate 40 earlier this year when Albuquerque police pulled him over. Police said they found prescription pills and an open container of beer in the car. Now, the district attorney’s office has charged Hagel with DWI, having an open container of alcohol and careless driving. The DWI charge isn’t for alcohol, though. His blood-alcohol level was 0.00 when he was arrested. Instead, prosecutors say the charge is for intoxicating drugs. State law states, “It is unlawful for a person who is under the influence of any drug to a degree that renders him incapable of safely driving a vehicle to drive a vehicle within this state.” That’s in the same law as alcohol-related DWI. Hagel will be arraigned on July 27. www.kobtv.com/index.cfm?viewer=storyviewer&id=26868&cat=NMTOPSTORIES

Sept. 01, 2006 - ALBUQUERQUE -- A judge today called a fired Bernalillo County deputy sheriff's actions an outrage. Officer Aaron Hagel, 33, was arrested in his patrol car last April for drunk driving, possession of an open container and careless driving. While he was out of jail awaiting trial, Hagel was supposed to abide by certain conditions including abstaining from liquor. But on Tuesday a Metro Court judge, after learning Hagel had tested positive for alcohol, found the ex-officer in contempt of court and sent him to jail for two days. Today the judge ordered Hagel to attend counseling and remain sober. www.krqe.com/expanded.asp?ID=16928

I am totally against tyranny and a corrupt government ,but it's a shame that bully Gestapo cops and others in law enforcement get a bad rap because of people like Hagel. I am glad the Albuquerque police were Honorable and treated Mr. Hagel as if he were just another citizen and not a police officer. Looking the other way because he was a police officer only makes a good peace officer look bad.
