09.09.2006 - A Jackson police sergeant has been placed on administrative leave without pay pending the outcome of a DUI case against him in Brownsville. Sgt. Kelvin Rhyne, who is the head of the Community Crime Reduction Unit/bicycle patrol, will be fired from the department if he is convicted on the DUI charge, Police Chief Rick Staples said Friday. Rhyne, 46, has been with the JPD for 22 years. He could not be reached for comment Friday night. Staples said that Rhyne was placed on administrative leave Tuesday and will remain on leave until the case is resolved in a Brownsville court. "He's a good officer," Staples said. "He just made a bad decision." Details on what led to the arrest and charging of Rhyne were not available Friday from Brownsville police. According to the Haywood County General Sessions Court clerk's office, Rhyne also is facing charges because his registration had expired and because he violated the due care law, which requires that motorists drive at a safe speed, keep a safe lookout and keep their vehicle under proper control. The office said Rhyne went through a bail bondsman to put up a bond for $500. He is scheduled to appear in court next on Nov. 29. www.jacksonsun.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060909/NEWS01/609090304/1002
