January 6, 2007 Adam Crisp A Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department officer is on leave with pay after Savannah-Chatham Counter Narcotics Team officers arrested her on charges of trying to illegally obtain a prescription. Cynthia Powell, an Islands Precinct patrol officer, surrendered to police Friday morning shortly after 11 a.m. and was booked into the Chatham County jail. Powell was charged with a felony count of obtaining a controlled substance by fraud/forgery. A judge later released her on her own recognizance. SCMPD spokesman Anthony Fulton said the case will be forwarded to the District Attorney's Office for review. Until that review is complete, Powell is to remain on leave. "This is a very sad situation, but we have an obligation to the citizens of Savannah-Chatham County that officers follow the law," said Police Chief Michael Berkow. Powell, 26, has been with the department for two years. savannahnow.com/node/207912
