A 41-year-old Chattanooga Police Officer who was charged with the rape of a 22-year-old East Ridge woman has been granted a pre-trial diversion. Charges can be expunged against Officer Michael R. Adams if he gets in no further trouble during the two-year diversion period. Adams appeared Wednesday before Criminal Court Judge Barry Steelman. Prosecutor Jason Thomas said there was "a strong factual dispute in the case. It was her word against his." East Ridge Police said the alleged incident happened Nov. 3. They said the woman reported that an acquaintance, Adams, had sexually assaulted her in her residence. Police began an investigation that led to charges of rape being filed in East Ridge City Court Tuesday. Adams, who had been with the city police about two years, claims the woman consented, the prosecutor said. Prosecutor Thomas also said, "There is no question that she pursued the relationship and invited him to her apartment." He said Adams otherwise has a clean record in the military and with the police. The rape charge was changed to sexual battery. Attorney Bryan Hoss said, "The defendant does not admit to any wrongdoing and the judge made no findings whatsoever that the defendant did anything wrong." www.chattanoogan.com/articles/article_94501.asp
