September 12, 2006 - KENOSHA, Wis. - A sheriff's deputy was charged with sexual assault Monday after investigators said he overlooked the outstanding warrants of a woman he pulled over in exchange for sexual favors. Deputy Ryan J. Schabo, 25, of Kenosha was placed on administrative leave Saturday, Kenosha County Sheriff David Beth said in a news release. Schabo was charged with one felony count of third-degree sexual assault and one felony count of misconduct in office. The charges carry a maximum penalty of 13 1/2 years in prison and fines of $35,000. The 22-year-old woman told investigators she was coming home from work around 2:45 a.m. Saturday when Schabo, who may have known her from outside of work, pulled her over, Beth said. Schabo was on patrol, in uniform and in a marked squad car. The woman said she had outstanding warrants and driver's license issues, but Schabo did not take her into custody in return for sexual favors, Beth said. Schabo was arrested later Saturday and taken to the Kenosha County Detention Center where he remained until making his initial court appearance Monday afternoon. He was released on a $5,000 signature bond and ordered to have no contact with the woman, according to online court records. The sheriff's department turned the investigation over to the Kenosha Police Department but continued to pursue an internal investigation. Schabo was hired by the department in May 2003. www.duluthsuperior.com/mld/duluthsuperior/15495731.htm
