July 15, 2006 - A former San Diego police officer, accused of having sex with a Sweetwater Unified High School District student, pleaded guilty yesterday to charges that could send him to prison for up to five years.
Cedric J. Green, 45, admitted in a San Diego Superior Court plea agreement that he unlawfully engaged in sexual intercourse with a minor four times in April and May.
Green originally faced 18 sex offense charges involving the 17-year-old girl from Southwest High School, but prosecutors dropped the other counts in exchange for the guilty pleas.
Judge George “Woody” Clarke said he would consider placing Green on probation at a sentencing hearing scheduled for Sept. 13, but he made no promises about what punishment he will impose.
Green, a 21-year member of the police department, was arrested May 16 after an investigation that began with a tip to San Diego police six days earlier. He later was freed on a $290,000 bond and remains out of custody.
Deputy District Attorney Rachel Cano said outside the courtroom yesterday that Green pleaded guilty to sex acts that took place on April 7, April 10, April 13 and May 8. She said the dismissed counts pertained to additional sex acts Green was accused of committing on those dates.
Cano has said that none of the incidents occurred on the school campus.
Green was assigned to the Southern Division's juvenile services team for 14 years, working at Mar Vista High in Imperial Beach and Southwest High in the south San Diego neighborhood of Nestor, according to a police spokesman. The spokesman said Green counseled students against drug use, gang involvement and other crime-related issues.
Green was placed on unpaid leave after his arrest. He later retired, a police spokesman said.
Defense attorney James Bishop said in a telephone interview that he and his client are focusing for now on the upcoming sentencing.
Bishop said Green would like to apologize to the victim in the case, as well as to Police Chief William Lansdowne, his former colleagues, his wife and his family.
