07.21.2006 - A former city police officer has been convicted of raping and molesting an 11-year-old girl over two years. An Allegheny County jury Monday found Robert Payne, 46, of Stanton Heights, guilty of all eight charges he faced during his trial, including rape of a child, aggravated indecent assault, statutory sexual assault and endangering the welfare of children. The victim, now 15, testified that Payne assaulted her in Stanton Heights in 2002 and 2003. Common Pleas Judge Donna Jo McDaniel revoked Payne's bond and ordered him to jail pending his sentencing in October. Payne faces a mandatory sentence of at least 15 years in prison and could get up to 72 years. He also faces a second trial in October on charges that he molested a 4-year-old girl. A 15-year veteran who was assigned to the East Liberty station, Payne was fired after his arrest in May 2004. www.pittsburghlive.com/x/tribunereview/news/westmoreland/s_462491.html
