06.07.2006 - WENTWORTH -- Stoneville police officer Roger Walker was arrested on charges of second-degree rape Tuesday, after a complaint in late February prompted a three-month state investigation.
He was released on a $100,000 bond. His trial has been scheduled for June 26 in Rockingham Superior Court. Walker has been suspended with pay since March 23.
On Feb. 28, the State Bureau of Investigation began investigating Walker, a 16-year veteran of the Stoneville Police Department and police Chief Gary Walker's son.
On that date, a person whom investigators would not identify went to the Rockingham County Sheriff's Office to make a complaint against Walker, and Sheriff Sam Page turned the case over to the SBI.
Walker was indicted Monday in Rockingham Superior Court. According to the indictment, the grand jury found that on Feb. 24, Walker "unlawfully, willfully, and feloniously did ravish and carnally know" the victim "by force and against her will."
Neither the SBI, the sheriff's office nor town officials would release details of the allegations, and they were not included in the indictment.
Second-degree rape is a felony that carries a maximum sentence of 21 years in prison.
In 1993, after four years on the force, Walker was placed on administrative leave with pay while the SBI investigated a harassment complaint against him. A woman said Walker issued her a speeding ticket because she refused to continue dating him. The SBI found no evidence of harassment in that case.
