06.02.2006 - A Henry County grand jury returned a seven-count indictment on Thursday against a former Henry County Police officer accused of molesting a teenage girl.
Randolph Cobian was arrested last Aug. 5, by Henry County authorities and fired from the police department he served for two years after the girl’s father discovered the two together at the girl’s home early that morning. Cobian had reportedly been on duty and out of his patrol area when the father came home at 5:30 a.m.
A grand jury indictment charges him with statutory rape, three counts of child molestation and three counts of aggravated child molestation. Each count of child molestation carries a sentence of 5-20 years. Aggravated child molestation carries a sentence of 10-30 years, and statutory rape a sentence of 10-20 years, Flint Judicial Circuit District Attorney Tommy Floyd said.
Cobian, who was released on bond after his arrest, could not be reached for comment Thursday. A phone number listed for his McDonough home was disconnected.
Authorities in August alleged that Cobian had been the girl’s swim coach at an area school. She was 16 at the time of his arrest, but according to Thursday’s indictments, was under 16 at the time of the incidents, which happened between June 2004 and July 2005.
He was 28 at the time of his arrest.
Henry County Police had no immediate comment, but in August, Police Chief Russell Abernathy said the incident was “an embarrassment to the county.”
“All the officers are upset about this,” he said. “They’re stunned. This is a fellow officer that they trusted and worked with. It’s shocking to them.”
