04/22/2006 - A former deputy with the Caroline County Sheriff's Office has been charged with sexual offenses involving a teenage girl in Hanover County.
Michael Scott Brewbaker, a 34-year-old Ashland man, was charged Thursday with seven counts of taking indecent liberties with a child by a person in a supervisory relationship, a felony charge that can include sexual touching between a juvenile and an adult in a supervisory role.
The Hanover Commonwealth's Attorney's Office will prosecute the case. Brewbaker will be arraigned in Hanover Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court on Wednesday.
The Virginia State Police began investigating Brewbaker in early March following allegations of sexual misconduct involving a 17-year-old Hanover girl. Authorities say the teenager is not related to Brewbaker and that the alleged activity occurred between June and December of 2005.
The state police turned over the results of the investigation earlier this month to the Hanover Commonwealth's Attorney's Office. Brewbaker turned himself in yesterday at the Pamunkey Regional Jail and was given a $25,000 bond.
Brewbaker had worked for the Caroline Sheriff's Office for about 10 months, said Sheriff Tony Lippa. He submitted a letter of resignation yesterday. Lippa said he resigned voluntarily.
Brewbaker was suspended by the Sheriff's Office in late March after Lippa learned of the investigation. Lippa said that Brewbaker had done a good job with the office and he had received no complaints about his performance.
"This comes as a shock to me," Lippa said.
Each charge facing Brewbaker is a felony punishable by up to five years in prison.
