June 13, 2006 - WAXAHACHIE, Texas -- A Dallas police officer is facing charges of sexual assault of a child, NBC 5 News reported.
Investigators with the Ellis County Sheriff's Department confirmed that they have charged Dallas Police Officer Joe Ramos with indecency with a child and sexual assault of a child. The charges were announced in Waxahachie, where the officer lives.
Investigators said the alleged victims are both male and female.
The charges are in the hands of the district attorney's office for a grand jury referral.
Ramos has not been arrested. If the grand jurors find that the charges have merit, a post-indictment warrant will be issued and Ramos will be arrested.
The grand jury meets every other week, but according to investigators, it usually takes a month for new cases to be heard by the grand jury.
Ellis County District Attorney Joe Grubbs said it is unusual, but not unheard of in a grand jury referral, that Ramos was not arrested when he is charged in a child sex case.
The Dallas Police Department said it is aware of the investigation but has not started its own internal probe of the allegations because it is unfamiliar with the specific charges.
Ramos remains on the job, and no action has been taken against him by the Dallas Police Department.
