01/13/2006 - SCOTTS VALLEY, Calif. - A San Jose police officer was arrested on suspicion of felony sexual exploitation after explicit photos of a 16-year-old Scotts Valley girl were found on his home computers, prosecutors said.
Kenneth Earl Williams Sr., 49, was arrested at his San Jose home on Thursday and booked into the Santa Cruz County Jail, where he posted bond and was released from custody early Friday morning, police and jail officials said.
Prosecutors planned to file charges on Friday against Williams for allegedly destroying evidence and coercing the girl to pose for the sexually explicit photos, said Santa Cruz County District Attorney Bob Lee.
"It's disturbing that someone has taken an oath and made a career of protecting society and protecting our children and in this case he decided to exploit them," Lee said. "We feel confident of the investigation and the arrest."
A man at Williams' San Jose residence hung up when a reporter from The Associated Press called for comment Friday morning.
Detectives began investigating Williams after receiving a complaint on Dec. 13 about alleged inappropriate sexual behavior by the off-duty officer, who was volunteering with teenagers in Scotts Valley at the time, said Scotts Valley Police Capt. Harry Bidleman.
Officers interviewed Williams and searched his home computers but did not make an arrest until further investigation of the computer hard drives uncovered the photos, Bidleman said.
Police have not found evidence that anyone else was involved and do not know if the images were distributed online, Bidleman said.
