02.02.2007 - Medina County Sheriff Gilbert Rodriguez resigned from his position Wednesday amid allegations that he assaulted a county employee.
The sheriff had been investigated for several weeks for allegedly assaulting Jan Quintana, a jail administrator.
Quintana filed an assault report against Rodriguez for an incident that allegedly occurred inside a jail last December.
She said she didn't want to talk specifics about the case, but a district attorney who reviewed the case said the pair had a disagreement that according to Quintana became physical.
Rodriguez's friends said he had been thinking about stepping down for days.
Rodriguez made no mention of the assault when he resigned. Quintana said she will no longer pursue criminal charges against Rodriguez because she feels his resignation was enough vindication.
The attorney said the case is closed.
Meanwhile, Chief Deputy Randy Brown, a longtime friend of Rodriguez, will take over as interim sheriff.
Brown is a 15-year veteran of the sheriff's office.
