He was supposed to become Wall Township's next police chief. But just days before he began his new job, Captain Bernard Sullivan had his promotion pulled.
That's because he was arrested for driving under the influence.
New Jersey reporter Toni Yates has details on the latest New Jersey officer to have a run-in with the law.
We're talking about an officer who is well known and apparently very well liked. This run-in, however, may have cost him a big promotion.
"It's just a tragedy for the town," one resident said. "He's a great guy. My friend is best friends with him, and said he's a great guy."
According to police reports, a Wall Township officer says he observed Sullivan run a red light a nearly cause an accident early Saturday morning. The officer claims he stopped Sullivan a few blocks later after he says the captain drove into the opposite lanes of traffic. He was arrested for driving while intoxicated.
"Our obligation here is to the public," Wall Township Administrator Joseph Verruni said. "Our police department did their job."
Captain Sullivan joined the Wall Township Police Department in 1984. Township leaders were impressed enough with his time on the force to promote him to Chief. Today, Wednesday, is the former chief's last day. Sullivan was set to take over Thursday.
With the charges, that decision was nullified.
"He was a 23-year police veteran," Verruni said. "He has performed extremely well for the police department, and in this instance, he was placed under arrest."
Captain Sullivan will face the charges in a Monmouth County courthouse. Depending on the outcome of that, the township will decide his future with the police department.
