MILWAUKEE - They marched, chanted and protested against what they believe is another case of Milwaukee police brutality. Alderman Mike McGee and the alleged victims made their voices heard Saturday outside the home of the accused officer.
They chanted, "What do we want? -- Justice. When do we want it? -- Now."
The voices of protestors shook a south side Milwaukee home where Milwaukee Police Sergeant Jesus Ortiz lives. Alderman McGee said, "We want to send a message to the rank and file and all the officers that they can not beat our people and get away with it."
McGee led the protest against Ortiz accusing him of assaulting Khadijah Young and her husband Alphonso after a fight broke out at George Webb's in November. More than a month later no charges have been filed. The victims are calling for action.
"He had no right to punch me in my eye once I was in hand cuffs," Khadijah Young said. "He just was wrong."
Young was in a police van when she says she was punched and choked.
Following the incident, Ortiz was suspended from the force.
About a dozen people showed up Saturday to protest. They say they are fighting for a justice that is long overdue.
"I feel like my case is being swept under the rug," Young said.
Sergeant Ortiz was home during the protest. Reporters asked him, "Do you think it's tarnishing your reputation? Ortiz replied, "Naturally.. What happens at work is at work. I don't bring my business home and I expect it to stay that way."
That's all Ortiz told reporters before shutting his door. But Ortiz's neighbors say the sergeant told them what happened was an accident. "He was trying to get her in the squad and she turned her face at that time," one neighbor said.
Could it have been an accident? Khadijah Young said, "No. I am wearing his ring mark right under my eye. Not accidental at all."
The Young's say they were not even involved in the restaurant brawl.
Ortiz has been suspended. The District Attorney's office is still investigating.
