SALT LAKE CITY - A Salt Lake County deputy has been charged with theft for allegedly stealing 400 dollars from a courthouse office to pay his utility bill. Documents filed in 3rd District Court charge Deputy James Coleman with a class A misdemeanor for the alleged theft on January 3rd. A Matheson Courthouse surveillance video shows Coleman in a security office removing a folder of cash from a filing cabinet. Prosecutors say Coleman said he needed to use the phone in the office because his cell phone was dead and he needed to make a call. Later that day, Coleman was seen on a surveillance video at a check cashing store paying his 150-dollar utility bill and talking on his "dead" cell phone. Investigators say Coleman told them needed money because the power at his home had been shut off. Coleman has worked for the Salt Lake County sheriff's office as a corrections officer for seven years. He's been placed on paid administrative leave. www.abc4.com/news/local/story.aspx?content_id=a5ebee5d-5663-413a-8223-7a9d450793b9
