A City of Petersburg (Va) Police Officer has been charged as a result of a traffic crash that occurred on July 18, 2006.
The crash resulted in the death of an elderly Petersburg couple.
Petersburg's Commonwealth Attorney Cassandra S. Burns reviewed the initial investigation reports and Officer David Michael Christian, 30 of Petersburg was charged with reckless driving by the Virginia State Police.
Robert Linwood Allen, 75, and Juanita Jeanette Allen, 71 of the 100 block of Henrico Street in Petersburg were killed in the accident.
State Police Officials said the crash occurred at 11:35 p.m. on East Washington Street at the intersection with Henrico Street. Officer Christian was responding to a disturbance call in the 100 block of Croatan Drive. He was traveling eastbound in the right travel lane.
Officials say as Officer Christian approached the intersection, a 1988 Ford Ranger pickup truck operated by Mr. Allen, pulled out from a gas station and was crossing the intersection when the police vehicle struck the pickup truck. Officer Christian was operating his departmental issued 1997 Ford Crown Victoria marked police vehicle.
State Police said the Allens were not wearing safety belts and died at the scene of the crash. Officer Christian was wearing a safety belt and received a head injury. He was transported to Southside Regional Medical Center in Petersburg and was later released.
Officials say that the crash investigation has revealed that the officer was traveling in excess of 65 miles per hour in a posted 35 miles per hour zone. Additional evidence has revealed the police vehicle did not have any emergency equipment activated at the time of the crash.
The crash is still under investigation by members of the Virginia State Police Crash Reconstruction Team.
