06.23.2006 - A former Crowley police officer who was indicted this month on charges that he downloaded pornography on his office computer has been arrested on sexual assault charges in Hood County.
Robert Greene, 40, of Burleson is facing seven new charges, including four counts of sexual assault and three counts of indecency with a child.
Hood County began investigating Mr. Greene shortly after the child pornography arrest at his home in Burleson, officials said.
When he was taken into custody after his initial arrest, Mr. Greene asked officers whether the arrest was for sexual assault. That statement led investigators to Hood County, where Mr. Greene had lived.
Officials there began to look into the possible sexual assault of a teenage girl, said Rob Christian, the county's prosecutor.
"It's important to say that all of these counts relate to the same victim," Mr. Christian said.
He declined to give the girl's age.
If convicted, Mr. Greene could receive up to 20 years on each count and would be required to register as a sex offender for life. He was being held at the Hood County Jail in lieu of $350,000 bail on Thursday.
"He's in a protective cell because of his previous occupation," Hood County Sheriff Gene Mayo said.
Mr. Greene's arrest Monday was the second time this month he has been taken into custody.
U.S. marshals in Tarrant County arrested him June 12 after a grand jury issued an indictment charging him with two counts of possession of child pornography. The indictment alleges Mr. Greene downloaded child pornography on his city-owned computer.
The former detective and police training coordinator was the only person who had access to the computer, Crowley Police Chief Kirk Nemitz said.
In November, police launched an in-house inquiry after a virus attacked the department's computer system. Inappropriate images were found on Mr. Greene's computer, Chief Nemitz said. He was later fired.
If convicted on the Tarrant County charges, Mr. Greene could face up to 10 years in prison.
