SEATTLE, WASHINGTON – A King County sheriff’s deputy accused of sexually assaulting his wife will likely face a jury trial.
Deputy M. Amaad Deallah was expected to plead guilty to some of the charges against him Monday at Kent Municipal Court as part of an agreement with prosecutors. Instead, Deallah declined to change his plea and is now scheduled to be tried in March.
Deallah is charged with two counts of fourth-degree domestic violence assault, including one with sexual motivation, and one count attempted unlawful imprisonment. All are misdemeanors.
News that Deallah would face trial came as a disappointment to his wife, Joyce Deallah.
In a telephone press conference, Joyce Deallah said her estranged husband blames her for damage done to his career because of the charges against him.
She said she’ll remain afraid for her life regardless of the expected trial’s outcome.
“I don’t think that a conviction would really mean anything,” she said. “Nobody is going to respect it.”
Amaad Deallah could not be reached for comment. His attorney declined to comment.
The charges against Deallah stem from an incident in April when police say Deallah, 46, sexually assaulted his wife, then trapped her in the couple’s bedroom.
Joyce Deallah told investigators her husband forced himself on her in their bedroom after a fight in which he repeatedly shoved her down, according to court documents. She told police that he blocked her in the bedroom and she fled the house by leaping from a second-story window.
Authorities became involved when the couple arrived at Harborview Medical Center so that Joyce Deallah could be treated for injuries she sustained during the incident, according to court documents.
Amaad Deallah told investigators that the sex was consensual, according to court documents. In an interview with Kent police at the hospital, he claimed that his wife enjoyed “rough sex.”
So Much So That She Jumped From A Second Story Window To Escape It. - Critique
King County prosecutors declined to file felony charges against Deallah, citing a lack of evidence to support the more serious charge.
A 21-year veteran of the department, Deallah is currently on paid administrative leave, said Deputy Bob Conner, a Sheriff’s Office spokesman. An internal investigation continues in the case.
