PINETOPS — A Wayne County deputy was charged with driving while intoxicated Monday night and lost his job Tuesday morning.
William Roscoe Young, 44, of Cresent Drive in Wilson, was charged with DWI after he wrecked his 1998 Ford car along N.C. 42 near Pinetops at about 10:42 p.m.
Young, who was headed westbound, drove the car left of the center lane, struck a tree and landed in a ditch, according to Lt. Everette Clendenin, spokesman for the N.C. Highway Patrol. Young was not injured in the wreck.
A trooper arrived at the scene and determined Young had been drinking, Clendenin said. Young blew a 0.13 on a breathalyzer test, over the legal limit of 0.08.
Young was taken to the Edgecombe County magistrate's office, where he was later released after processing.
Wayne County Sheriff Carey Winders learned of the deputy's arrest around midnight or 1 a.m., he said Tuesday. Young was fired Tuesday morning.
"This is a policy we have in place. If you're charged with an alcohol-related offense, you will be terminated," Winders said.
Young had been working for the department for nearly three years, and previously worked for the Wilson County Sheriff's Office.
The charge marks the second DWI incident in four months involving a Wayne County deputy. Matthew Ryan Sasser, 22, was charged with DWI Sept. 12 while off-duty in Johnston County.
Sasser had been driving his patrol car outside of Wayne County without authorization to do so.
Highway Patrol troopers arrested Sasser after he was allegedly speeding, lost control of the car and struck a bridge guardrail. His blood alcohol level registered a 0.08.
He was fired immediately following the incident.
Winders said he is disappointed with the latest incident, and called it "an embarrassment" for all in the department.
"He was a good deputy. He made a bad choice, a mistake," Winders said. "This is very unfortunate and embarrassing to anybody who wears the badge."
