01.02.2007 - EL PASO - An El Paso police officer accused of causing a multi-vehicle crash while driving drunk last month is on unpaid suspension for an undetermined amount of time. But Police Chief Jeff Price said Tuesday that Officer Gregory Heiken's 13-year law enforcement career could end soon. Heiken may resign. Price said Heiken's suspension began Thursday, the same day that his two-week vacation ended. "If he did what is claimed that he did, then he definitely needs to be suspended," Price said, but added, "I don't think it's the end of it. I think he knows he messed up and will look for other employment, I would have to say." "We're waiting for his resignation," Price said, saying he is unsure when or if the department will receive it. "It's pretty tough to swallow. I imagine he's having a hard time swallowing (the crash's impact) himself." Heiken, 37, of El Paso - honored in 2004 by the state for making the most DUI arrests in Woodford County - had just started vacation when, on Dec. 11, he allegedly slammed his pickup truck into a line of stopped vehicles on northbound Illinois Route 116 at Highview Road in East Peoria. He admitted to drinking at the Par-A-Dice riverboat casino shortly before the crash occurred. Heiken was charged in Tazewell County court with aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol, a felony, and misdemeanor DUI. www.pjstar.com/stories/010207/PM__BC04RHAN.045.shtml
