January 4, 2007 Orlando -- The trial against a state corrections officer accused of helping to arrange a 13-pound cocaine deal in Volusia County began Wednesday in federal court in Orlando. Michael Wright, 29, was indicted in October by a federal grand jury on one count of conspiracy to distribute narcotics along with Sylvester Bright after a government informant tried to buy cocaine from them, according to court records. U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration agents used an informant to pose as a cocaine buyer Aug. 19 at a convenience store in DeLand. The agreed price of $18,200 for the drug was later changed to $20,000, DEA Agent Daniel McCaffrey testified Wednesday, but the transaction was not completed because Bright and Wright fled when they noticed a law-enforcement helicopter circling nearby. Wright is a lieutenant with the Indian River Correctional Facility in Vero Beach, according to court records. His job status with the Department of Corrections could not be learned Wednesday. Bright pleaded guilty and reached an agreement with the U.S. Attorney's Office on Wednesday to avoid a trial. Wright's trial, meanwhile, is expected to end Friday. The men face at least 10 years to life in prison and a $4 million fine. www.orlandosentinel.com/news/local/orange/orl-mcfbriefs04_707jan04,0,5637496.story?coll=orl-news-headlines-orange
