11.18.2006 - DALLAS — A veteran Dallas police officer was jailed in federal custody Friday on charges that center around alleged drug-dealing.
News 8 has learned that the Drug Enforcement Administration originally received a tip that the wife of Senior Cpl. Jose Luis Cabrera was possibly involved in drug trafficking, and that he was doing nothing to stop it.
The FBI took eventually over the case, and they arrested Cabrera—on the force for 11 years—at the Northwest Patrol division Friday morning. Cabrera's wife, Moraima, was also taken into custody.
Sources tell News 8 that Cabrera's wife was allegedly selling cocaine from their home, and that the officer may have been inside the house when some of the alleged drug sales were taking place.
Cabrera, who is originally from Colombia, has claimed over the years that he was in the Columbian military. Recently, the Dallas Police Department selected him to run the first Spanish language citizen's police academy.
In an interview, Cabrera said he wanted to help Spanish-speaking citizens feel better about police, because in his native land, police were feared.
"Sometimes they are corrupt, and in a lot cases are abusive," Cabrera said.
Cabera also told News 8 that he wanted to help recent immigrants understand U.S. laws so they could stay out of jail, "...instead of falling into trouble and getting arrested or something."
Cabrera said he enjoyed living a life of luxury, and often and bragged that his wife owned businesses in Mexico and planned to buy land in Colombia.
In a separate case, Cabrera is the target of an internal affairs investigation for allegedly using excessive force.
Cabrera joined the Dallas Police Department in 1995. He previously spent five years in the U.S. Army, where he was a sergeant at Fort Hood.
Cabrera is being held at the Federal correctional institution in Seagoville. His wife is in custody on federal drug charges, and sources said she may also be in the country illegally.
