An ex-Danbury police officer is waiting to hear how he'll pay for sexually assaulting a child. An all-male jury found James Bernard Isenhower, 52, guilty of the crime Thursday. He faces up to 20 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
Brazoria County prosecutors contend Isenhower had a sexual relationship with a 14-year-old girl in 1999. The girl and her mother are from the Ukraine and moved to Angleton when the mother married another man. The girl testified when the couple divorced after a month-long marriage, they first moved in with Isenhower and then eventually rented their own apartment. The girl -- who is now 21 -- testified Isenhower and the mother started dating, and he started to have sex with the girl as well.
The mother testified the girl became pregnant by Isenhower, and he helped her get an abortion in Houston. The mother and her daughter moved in with Isenhower in Colorado Springs, Colo., in 2001. They moved out when the couple broke up in 2005.
The mother told jurors she felt Isenhower had power over her because she immigrated from a foreign country. She said, "At that time, I figured he would follow me all of my life." She said she was intimidated by him because he worked in law enforcement.
Isenhower's attorney, Bill Leathers, asked why she lived with him after he had sex with her daughter. The woman said she had no choice because she was not legal here.
A probation officer from Colorado, Debbie Davidson, testified Thursday that Isenhower admitted having sex with the girl. Isenhower pleaded guilty to attempted sexual assault of a child in Colorado and served 90 days in jail and was put on 20 years probation.
