If someone files a complaint with a police departments internal affairs do they have a right to the copy of the report and the outcome? If you’re interested to know what complaints have been filed against police officers in your community, you may request a copy of that information be sent to you from that police agency. Send your request again "certified mail." Basically just request a copy of complaints of police officers in that agency be mailed to you, under the "Freedom of Information Act" and you would like this information sent to you within 10 days as required by law. DON’T ever walk into a police department ask for this information! They either start acting real stupid on the subject or they get real pissed! flyservers.registerfly.com/members5/policecrime.com/police_complaint.html

Thank you. I thought I was able to get a copy but was told by Internal Affairs that I couldn't have one. I saw what you posted previously by searching around but I guess I just wanted reassurance. Thanks again!

Thank you. I thought I was able to get a copy but was told by Internal Affairs that I couldn't have one. I saw what you posted previously by searching around but I guess I just wanted reassurance. Thanks again! Now you may not get the "actual report" on the officer. When I ask for copies of complaints from a police department it's usually several sheets of paper with all the officers names listed that have had complaints filed on them. For example my sheets reads: "Internal affairs division case assignment log." On it list the following; Investigation - 99-0118 Name of complainant - John Q. Public Person or persons complained against - Officer Smith Date of alleged activity - 10-01-1999 Date of complaint - 10-15-1999 Nature of complaint - Misconduct/Rudeness Disposition - Sustained or Not Sustained or Exonerated or Unfounded Disposition date - 11-21-1999 Don't hold your breath thinking that your complaint will cost the officer his job, "unless it was one of a serious nature." Most complaints are usually found to be in favor for the officer. The complaint you filed will stay in the officers file and if there is a pattern of misconduct then that's normally when something is done. I might be wrong, but some states are moving more towards a "police state" and have passed laws that says citizens are not able to view complaints filed by the public on police officers. Like I said, I will admit I'm not 100% sure on this. If I had to pick some states that might do that, I would say maybe California and Ohio? Just send your request "certified mail" and be sure to use the words "Freedom of Information Act." You might want to do a Google on "Freedom of Information Act" and the state you live in and see what you can find.

Thanks for the info Watcher. It's a little more detailed about trying to get the report but I don't want to post it openly.
