11.01.2006 - Shelby County Mayor A C Wharton is demanding answers and wants action over the question of who bugged the Mid-South Homeland Security office.
A spokesperson for Shelby County tells us those four listening devices at the center of this case are now in the custody of the Shelby County Sheriff's Office, turned over in preparation for what could be a criminal investigation.
Mayor A C Wharton says he's ready to get down to the bottom of the bugging. "It's a serious matter," he said.
Earlier this month, Shelby County leaders say someone found four listening devices hidden in the ceiling of the District 11 Homeland Security Offices.
No one with the County will say exactly who, but sources close to the investigation tell Action News 5 Lt. Matt Snyder, a Shelby County Fire employee who was temporarily assigned to the Homeland Security Office, discovered the bugs.
"Do you know who put the bugs there? No I do not. Why would someone want to bug the homeland security office..I have no idea," he told us exclusively Friday.
Snyder was suspended with pay Friday night. "Based on information I had last Friday, some erroneous statements were made with respect to involvement of FBI," explained Wharton.
Still, Wharton says this investigation is still in it's early stages and there's a lot more he needs to know.
"That leaves open the question of how long they had been there? Who put them there? Were they ever operational? Those are the questions that need to be answered?" he said and he says he wants them answered soon.
