Indianapolis - Officers were dispatched to an accident Friday around 8 p.m. on the ramp from I65 northbound to 29th involving a Indianapolis police officer. Further investigation revealed that IPD Officer Michael Greene was driving his marked police car and struck another vehicle that was stopped at the light at the bottom of the exit. Neither driver was injured. Marcella Pullins, the driver of the vehicle that was struck, advised the IPD supervisor on the scene that she suspected that Officer Greene might be drunk. The supervisor offered Officer Greene a portable breath test that he took and it registered .20 BAC. A DUI Task Force Officer was dispatched to the scene to complete the investigation. Officer Green told the investigator that he had stopped his car at the bottom of the ramp and then looked down at his cell phone and proceeded forward before the van in front of him pulled into traffic. Officer Greene at that point declined to take a field sobriety test offered by the investigator, but he did agree to take a certified breathalyzer test. The test resulted in a reading of .15 BAC. He was transported to the Arrestee Processing Center after being arrested for two class A misdemeanors. Office Greene was arrested for operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol and operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol with a blood alcohol content of over .08. www.wthr.com/Global/story.asp?S=5701965&nav=9Tai

Backus and a group of other off-duty officers consumed one or two beers each in a parking lot behind their East Patrol facility. Friends shouldn't have let friends drive home. Can you believe it, cops drinking at work and driving home or maybe even going on duty.

September 26, 2006 — The off-duty Monroe County Sheriff's deputy accused of driving drunk and killing a Greece man, likely had a blood-alcohol content three times the legal limit, officials from the Monroe County District Attorney's Office said Monday. Kristin Splain, DWI Bureau chief for the District Attorney's Office, confirmed that veteran deputy James R. Telban, Jr., 44, of Greece, was driving on Sept. 6 with a blood-alcohol content of 0.24 percent, the result of the deputy's preliminary test. According to state law, the legal threshold for driving while intoxicated is a blood-alcohol content of 0.08 percent. Over the weekend, he was charged with driving while intoxicated with a blood-alcohol content of 0.08 percent or more, a misdemeanor, she said. He was already facing one misdemeanor drunken driving charge from the Sept. 6 incident. That night, Telban pulled his pickup out in front of Peter Volkmuth, 27, of Greece, who was riding his motorcycle west on West Ridge Road in Parma., Sheriff's spokesman Cpl. John Helfer said. Volkmuth struck the driver's side of pickup and died at the scene. Volkmuth is survived by his wife Shannon and the couple's 4-year-old son Collin. Volkmuth was on his way to work — he was a machine operator for Birds Eye Foods Inc. — at the time of the accident, according to his wife. Peter and Shannon Volkmuth were high school sweethearts and were married for three-and-a-half years. "He was a wonderful man and will be very missed," she said. Telban, a 19-year veteran with the sheriff's office, was charged with driving while intoxicated and was suspended from his duties without pay. "If an officer is involved in any wrongdoing, there's always an internal investigation," Helfer said. Specific circumstances of each crime then determine whether a sheriff's deputy is suspended, with or without pay, he said. In this case, Telban is the subject of criminal and internal investigations led by the Monroe County District Attorney's Office and the Sheriff's Office. Both investigations are underway and are expected to be completed within the next few weeks, Splain said. Once finished, she said, the case will be presented to a grand jury to determine possible additional charges. Telban is expected to be arraigned on both DWI charges at 6 p.m. this evening in Parma Town Court. www.democratandchronicle.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060926/NEWS01/609260342/1002/NEWS

Sept. 01, 2006 - ALBUQUERQUE -- A judge today called a fired Bernalillo County deputy sheriff's actions an outrage. Officer Aaron Hagel, 33, was arrested in his patrol car last April for drunk driving, possession of an open container and careless driving. While he was out of jail awaiting trial, Hagel was supposed to abide by certain conditions including abstaining from liquor. But on Tuesday a Metro Court judge, after learning Hagel had tested positive for alcohol, found the ex-officer in contempt of court and sent him to jail for two days. Today the judge ordered Hagel to attend counseling and remain sober. www.krqe.com/expanded.asp?ID=16928

August 18, 2006 - A newly hired East Palo Alto police officer standing trial on misdemeanor charges of brandishing a firearm, battery, drunken driving and hit-and-run during an off-duty incident made a brief court appearance Wednesday, but will wait to enter a plea until late September. Officer Isaac Ramos, 25, planned to plea not guilty to the charge through the court's Public Defenders program, but San Mateo County Superior Court Judge Susan Jakubowski said Ramos earned too much money to qualify for the program. She ordered him to return to court Sept. 27 for arraignment with a privately hired lawyer at his side. Ramos remains on paid administrative leave with the Police Department, following his arrest in early July in Redwood City. In earlier interviews, Ramos said he and his cousin were waiting in the drive-through line at the Jack in the Box restaurant on Broadway Street when a man in a car in front of them started yelling, claiming they had hit his car. Ramos followed the man into a nearby Denny's parking lot and denied hitting his car. Ramos showed the man his police badge and said it was illegal to file a false police report. Ramos was arrested shortly afterward by Redwood City police officers. The man, identified in court paperwork Wednesday as Jacobo Martin, told police Ramos had brandished his department-issued .40-caliber Smith & Wesson handgun at him sometime during the incident. A woman with Martin, Ana Umana, alleged battery in the case. Both Martin and Umana could not be reached for comment Wednesday. The District Attorney's Office did not make a copy of Ramos' police report available. Ramos said security tapes outside the restaurant would clear him of the charges. Ramos was one of three officers hired in April and is still in his probationary employment period, where he can be fired at any time without an internal investigation. Ramos' resume was exactly what the department was looking for - he was born and raised in East Palo Alto, speaks Spanish fluently, serves as the president of his homeowner's association and is a member of the National Guard. He served two and a half months in Iraq with the National Guard and responded to New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. Ramos will return to San Jose State University next week to continue classes in Criminal Justice, while waiting for his trial to end, he said. East Palo Alto Police Chief Ron Davis was not available for comment Wednesday. www.mercurynews.com/mld/mercurynews/news/breaking_news/15298778.htm
