09.20.2006 - SAN DIEGO – A former San Diego police officer was sentenced to a year in a work-furlough program Tuesday for having a sexual affair with a 17-year-old female high school student.
The sentence will allow Cedric Green to work during the day but serve nights and weekends in custody. He was sentenced by San Diego Superior Court Judge George Clarke during a hearing in which the victim's mother chastised Green and the school system for not protecting her daughter.
Green was working for the department as a juvenile services officer assigned to the Southwest High School campus in the Sweetwater Unified School District when he illegally had sex with the girl in April and May.
Green, 45, pled guilty July 13 to unlawfully engaging in sexual intercourse with a minor and faced a maximum prison sentence of five years. Judge Clarke said that while Green violated the trust of a minor he also had done a lot of good during his 21 years as a police officer.
The case came to light after police received a tip in early May after a student told a teacher that another student was involved with an officer. Green, who is married, was arrested not far from his home six days later on May 16. He was freed on $290,000 bail and placed on unpaid leave. He later retired, a police spokesman said.
He originally faced 18 charges but the other counts were dropped in exchange for the guilty plea. Those counts had to do with additional sex acts that he was accused of committing with the girl, said Deputy District Attorney Rachel Cano.
Green worked at Mar Vista High in Imperial Beach and at Southwest High in Nestor for the past 14 years, counseling teenagers on such issues as drug abuse and gang involvement.
None of the incidents happened on campus, investigators said.
