01/17/2006 - CASSELBERRY FLORIDA · A poker game took a violent turn when an off-duty police officer shot two men who refused to let him play, authorities said.
Maitland Police Officer Daniel John Metevier shot Francis Webster in the shoulder, and Jason Granich in the stomach, Seminole County Sheriff's investigators said.
Granich was listed in serious but not life-threatening condition, the Sheriff's Office said. Webster's wound was superficial.
A police report said one player and Metevier refused the $100 buy-in, offering only $20 each. A disagreement followed, escalating when Granich chased officer Metevier out of the house, reports showed.
The three men still inside the house heard popping sounds and came out to find Granich bleeding from a stomach wound and Webster grazed in the left shoulder, reports said. Webster managed to restrain the shooter until deputies arrived.
Officer Metevier, 30, was charged with two counts of aggravated battery with a firearm and was released on $4,000 bail Sunday.
Officer Metevier has a good record with the police department, where he has worked since 2002. He took another job last year, but continued to work as a reserve officer, police spokeswoman Jonni Schardine said.
Schardine wouldn't say if the semiautomatic pistol used in the shooting was issued by the department.
Officer Metevier was placed on administrative leave pending the investigation.
