February 19, 2007 SACRAMENTO — Last year thieves stole more than 3,800 cars in Sacramento. On Monday, Sacramento police had to deal with a car theft of their own. It happened early this morning at the Motel 6 at 30th and N streets in downtown Sacramento. Police responded to two men breaking windows at the motel. An officer confronted them, but they took off running. Lt. Virgil Brown with the Sacramento Police Department said, "The officer was able to catch one of the subjects, was able to handcuff him started walking him to his vehicle and on reaching his vehicle found it was gone." Officers would not say whether the vehicle was still running, but admit the keys were in it, and it was left unlocked. "We suspect the other subject stole our vehicle, he drove it approximately five blocks and abandoned it we were able to track the vehicle with our GPS that's in the vehicle and we found it." But it takes just seconds to lock a car door. Most people have remote controls to get in and out of their cars but the Sacramento police don't. Officers have to lock the vehicles before leaving them, then manually open them with their key. Lt. Brown said, "Our policy states we will secure our vehicle when we leave it." What does that mean?. "You got to lock it, that's what that means." No word if the officer will be reprimanded. As for the car thief, he is still at large. fox40.trb.com/news/ktxl-021907copcar,0,5436749.story?coll=ktxl-news-1
