01.17.2007 - Commerce, GA- A police officer in northeast Georgia has been fired after admitting he stole $300 from an illegal immigrant to pay for a divorce lawyer. Commerce Police Sergeant Larry Floyd made the admission during an internal investigation. Commerce police provided the statement and the internal affairs investigation report in response to an open records request from the Athens Banner-Herald. Floyd - who had been with the force for four years - has not been charged with a crime. He was fired in December, following the investigation. Gainesville resident Esteban Sanchez Gomez - who lodged the complaint - was arrested after a wreck on US Highway 441. Gomez - who does not speak English and was not deemed at fault in the wreck, was charged with driving while unlicensed. Commerce police Chief John Gaissert says the arrest itself was legal. Floyd admitted taking the foreign man's cash while Gomez was in a holding cell. In a handwritten statement, Floyd apologized and said he was willing to repay the money. The chief says the officer did pay back the money. Gaissert says Commerce police did not call federal immigration authorities about Gomez's immigration status. www.wistv.com/Global/story.asp?S=5955545
