February 19, 2007 GREELEY, COLORADO — Police were investigating the death of a man shot by officers inside a hotel. Police responding to a call of a possible suicidal person around 5 p.m. Saturday found the man threatening to kill himself with a knife, police Sgt. Joe Tymkowych said. At least one officer shot him after he allegedly charged at officers with the knife, Tymkowych said. The identities of the victim and officers were not immediately released. Much of the hotel was booked because of the three-day The Rocky Mountain Showdown volleyball tournament that brought in 157 club teams from around the state. “We have a lot of young kids with us and were worried,” said Denise Pinegar of Parker, whose 12-year-old daughter was in the competition. She said her family was going to find another hotel. “Earlier I heard some people arguing, then I think I heard someone say ‘drop the knife’ and a couple of seconds later gunshots,” said Jacob McKiernan, 13, of Florence, who was staying in the room next to where the incident occurred with his family at the hotel. He was shaking and crying when he gave his statement to police officers. He said that he heard five or six shots go off and when he walked out in the hallway there were several police officers. www.thedenverchannel.com/news/11050350/detail.html
