01/25/2006 - COLUMBIA, Miss. - A former Marion County Sheriff's Deputy will serve two years behind bars for killing another deputy.
Greg Elkins was sentenced on Tuesday to 20 years in the custody of the Department of Corrections, with 18 years suspended.
Elkins pleaded guilty to manslaughter in December, 2005, for the January, 2005, killing of deputy Paul Hooper. Elkins was also fined $1,500 and ordered to pay $30,000 in restitution to Hooper's children.
Circuit Court Judge Michael R. Eubanks said he considered Elkins' history in law enforcement when handing down the sentence.
District Attorney Claiborne "Buddy" McDonald released a statement that said the sentencing was not a result of an agreement between the DA's office and defense attorneys.
Hooper, 24, died from a gunshot wound in the chest on Jan. 16 outside Hooper's home in the county, authorities said.
McDonald said Hooper was living with Elkins and his wife at the time of the shooting. The crime was in the "heat of passion," according to McDonald's release.
Elkins, who had been charged with murder, was a former captain with the Columbia Police Department.
Eubanks also sentenced Candice Curtis on Tuesday.
Curtis, 45, was charged with murder in the shooting death of a man with whom she shared a home, said Sheriff Danny Rigel.
Curtis pleaded guilty to killing Donnie Richardson, 52, in March, 2005, at her Oak Grove home.
She was charged with manslaughter and sentenced to 20 years in prison, with 15 years suspended and five years to serve.
Curtis was fined $1,500, was ordered to pay $1,000 to the Victims Compensation Program. She was also ordered to complete intensive drug and alcohol treatment.
Richardson was killed after a domestic dispute between the couple turned violent, Rigel said.
