LANDIS, N.C. -- The former police chief in the Rowan County town of Landis pleaded guilty to federal child pornography charges.
Charles Childers, 51, was arrested Aug. 17 in Greensboro on a criminal complaint that said he used the Internet to distribute child pornography across state lines and to coerce, induce and entice a person he believed to be a female juvenile to engage in sexual activity. The person actually was an undercover agent with the Michigan Attorney General's Office, authorities said.
Childers will be sentenced June 8 at the federal courthouse in Greensboro. He faces up to 45 years in prison.
This man is a disgrace and here is the othe side of the problem.
(Quote) Landis Mayor Mike Mahaley, who learned of the plea from an Observer reporter, expressed relief that the case was over. "It's put a black eye on the whole town. But we're moving forward," Mahaley said. He has known Childers for more than 30 years, and had talked with him last week.
"He was and still is a friend, but guilty is guilty," Mahaley said. "I hate that he done it (Quote)
I guess the Mayor is not to picky about who he considers to still be his friend in light of the fact that Childers and his double life has put a black eye on every decent and dedicated public servent out there, not to mention the entire communitee he serves. This kind of double speak from elected officials makes me sick. Would it be possible or completly out of the question for someone to comment on the children !!! that this creep has left in his wake??? or would that be to much to ask. I wonder what kind of influence his honor-the Mayor will have when its time to sentence his friend.
