02/28/2006 - WOODBURY -- A veteran police officer charged with possession of child pornography has resigned.
Terence Langin, 52, a 17-year officer here, resigned last week, but his resignation was retroactive to Jan. 31, according to First Selectman Dick Crane.
Langin has not worked since early December. He was arrested Dec. 14 after state police detectives seized two computers and software from his home in the Oakville section of Watertown on suspicions that the machines contained illegal pictures of children having sex.
Detectives found 29,400 images of child pornography on the computers and software, and charged Langin with first-degree possession of child pornography. They said many of the images were duplicates, but more than 2,000 were unique.
Langin was also charged on Feb. 3 at Waterbury Superior Court with promoting a minor in an obscene sexual performance and importing and exporting child pornography.
All three charges are Class B felonies, each punishable by up to 20 years in prison.
Terence Mariani, a senior assistant state's attorney, said state police are still investigating Langin, but did not say whether he would face more charges.
Langin, who is due back in court for another pretrial hearing on March 10, is being held on a $150,000 bond at Cheshire Correctional Center.
Langin, who has been married for 21 years and has a 17-year-old son, was allegedly downloading images from the Web and receiving and sharing some images with people he met online, according to an arrest warrant affidavit.
Among the images police found on his computers and software, at least two depicted identified sexual-assault victims, according to the warrant.
The first was of two males, who appeared to be between 8 and 15.
The warrant says a similar image was found of two males who appeared between 4 and 10.
Langin used an alias, Kyle Jones, to share the images with other men online, according to the warrant.
Until he resigned, Langin was suspended without pay from the town of Woodbury. His wife and son continued to receive medical benefits from the town, but they stop receiving those benefits today, according to Crane. Langin was paid $73,313 last year.
